The Money Quote

So subtle, I almost missed it.
From a recent parent email:

"Hopefully, we'll see an improvement in grades. That's the goal and objective."

Interesting...I thought the goal and objective was an improvement in learning.

I don't know...if you're correct that the State of North Carolina has decreed that all students are on the college prep track, then it might actually be about the grades (which get you into said college) rather than the learning...oh systemic dysfunction supported by political structures, how we love thee.

Can you be so sure there's not a correlation?! Between learning and grades, that is.............

I would hope that there is a correlation between learning and grades; in fact, I hope there is Causation (i.e., that learning more and better causes ones grades to improve). If simply improving grades were the chief end, then why not cheat?

Parents are grade obsessed, it's true. Learning for its own sake isn't really something that registers too often. But the problem is that learning without metrics isn't communicable as learning to anyone else, so assuming that you can get tests that actually do a decent job measuring learning (ie, without cheating), then there's no reason that pushing for an improvement in grades isn't a good proxy for learning... Still, the confusion of the measure with that which it's measuring is kind of silly.
